Appearing via video feed on Today With Hoda & Jenna, Katherine Heigl discussed the premiere of her new Netflix series Firefly Lane.

Speaking on February 1st from her home in the Utah mountains, the interview began with Katherine revealing her go to person: the best friend she would call in the middle of the night. “It’s my mother,” Heigl said, “It feels so weird saying that and I know it makes me sound like kind of a baby, but it is my mother”, she exclaimed laughing.

Based on the best selling novel by Kristin Hannah, Firefly Lane is the story of the unlikely bond between Tully Hart (Katherine Heigl) and Kate Mularkey (Sarah Chalke), who first meet in high school and form an enduring friendship that spans decades, despite their very different personalities and lifestyles. When the script for the television adaptation landed on her desk, Katherine explained to viewers that the timing was perfect. “This script came to me by… it just felt like… grace, because it was at the point in my life where I was really looking for a story like this to tell, to be a part of.”

During the pandemic many parents have struggled with having to home school their children. Katherine told Hoda and Jenna that she was no exception, and described the challenges of preparing lessons for her three kids.

“We have been very fortunate, up here in Utah our [COVID cases] numbers are pretty low. We have managed to stay safe and our schools have [largely] stayed open,” Katherine said. However, she added that when local schools were closed for a period of time she had attempted lessons herself with little success, “I tried so hard at the end of last year, and I gave up.  I just gave up. I’d rather they repeat the year than me try to teach them,” she joked.
